From the recording Sunflower's Debut
Dedicated to both my parents for showing me how to take the risks that lead you to finding and fulfilling your dreams.
Lyrics
They moved on average
Every seven years
Uprooting family
Chasing his careers
He worked long hours
Always home for dinner
She tended the home fires
He was the bread winner
Is he a pilgrim or martyr
I don’t know he’s just my father
We kids growing up didn’t
See him very much, but
Mom’s subtle warning gave it
A two parent touch
Just wait til your dad gets home
Was all she had to say
We knew that meant business
Get back outside and play
Is he a pilgrim or martyr
I don’t know he’s just my father
But he always provided
To middle class standard, a
Trampoline, a piano
A pool in the back yard
Then a car accident coming
Home from work late
Our mom all dressed up
For their now cancelled date
Is he a pilgrim or martyr
I don’t know he’s just my father
Six months in hospital
He became a changed man
Decided to go back to school
With new direction and plan
It took quite a long time
And a lot of perseverance
A PHD before he retired
Gave them their assurance
Is he a pilgrim or martyr
I don’t know he’s just my father
Now she has Parkinson’s
And he cooks the dinner
Gives her her medicines
He’s still her bread winner
He is patient loving and kind
Married sixty three years
She taught him to find what really
Matters it appears
Is he pilgrim or martyr
I don’t know he’s just my father
Repeat and then
Is he pilgrim or martyr
I do know he is my father
